For our customer, EUMETSAT we are looking for two future colleagues with experience in Cloud and Serverless activities and to maintain, support, develop our customer's on-prem and hybrid cloud infrastructure.

The scope of the work is built upon EUMETSAT cloud infrastructures and services, encompassing various cloud service models on Infrastructure as
a Service (IaaS) and Platform as a Service (PaaS), by relying on leading-edge technologies such as cloud technologies, (e.g. OpenStack, Docker, Kubernetes) and automation tools and by optimizing multi-cloud environments to offer unified and efficient platforms. In essence, the scope is driven by rapidly evolving cloud technologies to create an agile, secure, and efficient digital environment that is beneficial to EUMETSAT users, safeguards data, and advances meteorological and environmental monitoring.

The typical tasks would include:

  • Provide cloud systems maintenance (take over routine operations, monitoring, troubleshooting, patching, and upgrading, etc).
  • Assessment of current cloud services and infrastructure of EUMETSAT. Identifying strengths, weaknesses, and areas for improvement for the cloud services in each of the EUMETSAT cloud initiatives as well as identifying the synergies between existing EUMETSAT cloud platforms and solutions
  • Support the integration of new technologies into the existing cloud systems:
o Support the integration of new services such as GIT, Container registry and IAM (Identity and Access Management)
o Support the integration of resource-intensive services, such as Kubernetes, HTC (High-Throughput) batch processing, and serverless functions (such as OpenFaaS)
o Develop, enhance, and maintain IaC (Infrastructure as Code) scripts and configurations (e.g., Terraform, Ansible) to automate infrastructure provisioning and management
o Collaboration with cross-functional teams, including development, operations, and security to ensure a successful evolution of EUMETSAT’s cloud systems
  • Design, maintain and improve infrastructure automation strategies.
  • Development of customer use cases and examples to demonstrate benefits and possibilities of the cloud offering.
  • Provide end user support (related to cloud issues like guidance for best infrastructure utilization, review and improve use cases, troubleshoot problems, and provide ad-hoc training and expertise)

Your Profile:

Mandatory skills:

You should have experience managing, deploying, and scaling application in different cloud technologies:

  • Specifically, should have good understanding and experience in serverless architecture patterns, being able to design and implement serverless applications and support 3rd parties on their transition.
  • Should have experience with container orchestration (Docker and Kubernetes), being capable of deploy, manage, and troubleshoot container environments.
  • Should be familiar with OpenStack platform administration. This includes deploying, managing, and troubleshooting OpenStack infrastructure and services, and having good understanding of OpenStack components (Neutron, Cinter, Nova, Glance, Keystone, Heat, etc).
  • Should be fluent using Infrastructure as Code tool set (like Git, Terraform, Ansible or similar tools).
  • A good understanding of cloud networking concepts (as security groups, network access control lists, routing, firewalls, load balancing, subnetting, VPN and virtual private clouds) is necessary.

For an effective support, you should have:

  • Proficiency in scripting and automation using tools (Bash, PowerShell, Python or any other CLI for cloud infrastructure management and configuration).
  • Knowledge of Continuous Integration (CI), Continuous Testing (CT), and Continuous Deployment (CD) best practices, principles, tools, and frameworks.

Desired skills:

  • In-depth knowledge and practical experience in GNU/Linux system administration with multiple distributions.
  • The ability and experience to troubleshoot issues in a complex cloud environment involving multiple layers and being able to identify issues on application, network, and infrastructure layers.
  • Have practical experience on Function as a Service (FaaS) and/or Service Mesh and service to service layer.
  • Be familiar with cloud Artificial Intelligence / Machine Learning, ideally including practical implementation of algorithms and ML in environments.
  • Having experience and proficiency developing and deploying Cloud-Native Applications.
  • Be familiar with Elasticsearch, Logstash and Kibana (ELK) stack.
  • Be familiar with Dask and Apache Airflow.
  • Certifications, such CNCF, Linux foundation, CKA/CKS and similar are as well and advantage.

Fluency in English (spoken and written) is mandatory, as English is the working language. This is a hybrid position where you will be working up to 3 days/week at home and the rest at EUMETSAT's location in Darmstadt (a city of 160K population, 30km south of Frankfurt am Main) Germany.

The variety of the tasks and the scope of the systems to be supported require a high degree of autonomy and good analytical skills together with the ability to effectively cooperate within the team.
