The DLR Institute of Communications and Navigation is dedicated to mission-oriented research in selected areas of communications and navigation. Its work ranges from the theoretical foundations to the demonstration of new procedures and systems in a real environment and is embedded in DLR's Space, Aeronautics, Transport, Security and Digitalization programmes.

What to expect

In our modern society localization systems play an important role and people and industries depend on their availability. It is therefore desired to have a localization system that is available in all environments. For outdoor environments accurate localization is provided by globally available satellite-based systems such as GPS and Galileo. In contrast to outdoor environments, indoors typically no localization system is available. In your thesis/internship you therefore will work on the development of a novel magnetic field-based localization system. The proposed system uses distortions in the Earth magnetic field caused by magnetic material in buildings. The position estimation is done by comparing measurements of a magnetometer to a known map of the magnetic field. Having an accurate and updated map is therefore crucial for accurate localization. The thesis/internship focuses on the generation and the updating of magnetic maps and investigates to which extend a lidar-based SLAM system can support the map generation process.

Your tasks

  • Implementation of a lidar-based SLAM system
  • Evaluation of the SLAM system with data recorded in indoor environments
  • Creation of magnetic maps based on the lidar SLAM system
  • Investigation of options for incorporating the magnetic field into the SLAM algorithm

Your profile

  • Ongoing studies in electrical engineering or computer science
  • Very good programming skills
  • Very good math skills
  • Experience with ROS and SLAM methods
  • Ability to work independently and to solve problems on your own

We offer

DLR stands for diversity, appreciation and equality for all people. We promote independent work and the individual development of our employees both personally and professionally. To this end, we offer numerous training and development opportunities. Equal opportunities are of particular importance to us, which is why we want to increase the proportion of women in science and management in particular. Applicants with severe disabilities will be given preference if they are qualified.

We look forward to getting to know you!
