Bachelor-/Master-Thesis (f/m/x): Distributed Workflow Orchestration for Space System Development
Bremen
The Institute of Space Systems in Bremen is dedicated to designing and analyzing future spacecraft and space missions, including launchers, orbital and exploration systems, and satellites. Our evaluations focus on the technical feasibility, performance and costs of these systems, utilizing a range of cutting-edge, multi-disciplinary engineering methods.
What to expect
We are looking for motivated students with experience and a strong interest in the fields of software engineering, data science, containerization, and workflow orchestration. In this thesis, you will design, implement, and test components of data analysis pipelines for future space systems, such as technology demonstrator satellites or reusable launch systems. These pipelines will complement in-house developments and digitalization initiatives (e.g., COOPERANTS), and will be used to process engineering data from past and ongoing projects (e.g., CALLISTO, ReFEx, and Eu:CROPIS).
Your tasks
We currently offer several possible topics for a final thesis at DLR. Please indicate in your application which of the following topics aligns best with your interests:
- Definition of a distributed data pipeline infrastructure for engineering workflows
- Deployment of engineering models as containerized applications (“as a service”)
- User/Developer Experience (UX/DX) design of GitLab-managed workflows and models
Your profile
- Enrolled Bachelor’s or Master’s student in a relevant field (computer science, data science, mathematics, engineering, etc.)
- Strong programming and software engineering skills, especially in Python, GitLab, Linux (Bash), and Docker
- Experience with relevant workflow orchestration tools (e.g. Prefect, Airflow, or similar), as well as designing and managing REST APIs
- Good English proficiency
- German proficiency
- Aerospace engineering background
- Fulfillment of personal requirements for handling export-controlled goods, especially in accordance with the EU Dual-Use Regulation, national export control regulations, and EAR
We offer
DLR stands for diversity, appreciation and equality for all people. We promote independent work and the individual development of our employees both personally and professionally. To this end, we offer numerous training and development opportunities. Equal opportunities are of particular importance to us, which is why we want to increase the proportion of women in science and management in particular. Applicants with severe disabilities will be given preference if they are qualified.
We look forward to getting to know you!
